Payment Plan Details

The University of Michigan (U-M) provides an optional Payment Plan which allows parents/students to spread payment of anticipated educational expenses over 10 payments for the full academic year (or 5 payments for the Fall term only or Winter term only). The Payment Plan is an alternative option to the normal UM Payment schedule and is administered for the University by Sallie Mae.

Eligibility

Any University of Michigan (U-M) - Ann Arbor campus undergraduate, graduate, or professional school student, or the parent or guardian of such student, is eligible to participate in the U-M Payment Plan. Enrollment in the Payment Plan is not automatic. A student must be enrolled in the U-M Payment plan on a yearly basis.

Please note: Enrollment in the UM Payment Plan is not automatic for current participants. A student MUST be re-enrolled in the Payment Plan on a yearly basis.

Qualifying Expenses

The following expenses may be budgeted using the University of Michigan (U-M) Payment Plan:

  • Tuition
  • Mandatory Fees
  • Room & Board (including Blue Bucks)
  • Lab Fees
  • Miscellaneous Expenses charged to the student account AND not listed under the "Expenses That May Not Be Budgeted" section below.

The following expenses may not be budgeted using the U-M Payment Plan:

  • Personal Expenses
  • Books
  • Supplies
  • Living Allowances
  • Monthly Rent (Off Campus Housing or U of M Northwood Community Apartments)
  • Computers

Please contact Student Financial Services if there are additional questions concerning those charges that may be budgeted through the U-M Payment Plan.

Estimating the Annual Budgeted Amount

The Annual Budgeted Amount is the total estimated annual expenses less the total estimated credits (financial aid awards, student loans, scholarships, etc.). If enrolling for the 10 month Payment Plan, you may budget different or like amounts for each term.

The link below is to an estimated student budget for the Fall/Winter terms as provided by the Financial Aid Office. This may be a useful guide in establishing the annual budgeted amount.

It is recommended that in estimating expenses students estimate high and in estimating credits, estimate low. Credits for scholarships, financial aid, grants, etc. may not be applied to the Sallie Mae Payment Plan account. In this case, please contact Sallie Mae by phone at 1 (800) 635-0120 to adjust the amount of the Annual Budgeted Amount.

Billing

In addition to the Payment Plan statement received from Sallie Mae, a separate eBill will be generated from Student Financial Services. The eBill from Student Financial Services will reflect the actual charges for tuition, room/board, mandatory fees, Blue Bucks, as well as other charges the student may be responsible for. Payment records for the Sallie Mae Payment Plan and the University of Michigan student account are kept separately. To ensure prompt and proper credit for a U-M Payment Plan payment, please make sure to include the payment coupon from the Sallie Mae/U-M Payment Plan statement and mail it in the envelope that accompanies the Sallie Mae statement for the Payment Plan. Payments made to Student Financial Services can not be transferred to Sallie Mae.

Payment Plan Credits

Payments submitted to Sallie Mae on the U-M Payment Plan are not posted to the student's University of Michigan (U-M) student account as payments are made.

If enrolled in the 10 payment plan for Fall & Winter terms, you may budget different amounts for each term.  Your first five payments made (July 1 through November 1) will be for fall term.  The remaining five payments (December 1 through April 1) will be for winter term.  Each term, the U-M will post a credit to the student's account equal to the amount budgeted for that term.

If the student is enrolled in the Fall term only or Winter term only Payment Plan, the U-M will post a credit to the student's account equal to the Budgeted Amount for that plan.
