GSI/GSSA Waivers

GSI/GSSA's are covered by a contractual agreement between the Regents of the University of Michigan and Graduate Employees Organization/American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO Local 3550. The agreement entitles a GSI/GSSA to a full or partial tuition waiver based on their employment fraction and the number of credit hours registered for. If you have been appointed as a GSI or GSSA you will receive a full or partial tuition waiver if:

  • You are registered at least 5 credit hours for the Fall Term or Winter Term
    or
  • You are registered at least 1 credit hour for the Spring Term, Spring/Summer Term or Summer Term
  • Your appointment fraction is at least 8.7% or more. If your appointment fraction is 23.7% or more, you are entitled to a full tuition waiver. If your appointment fraction is less than 23.7% you are eligible for a partial tuition waiver.

Please see the table below to determine the tuition waiver you are eligible for.

GSI/GSSA Appointment Fraction Tuition Waiver

If the appointment is 23.7% or greater, the tuition waiver is 100% of tuition.

If the appointment is 18.7%, the tuition waiver is 61% of tuition.

If the appointment is 13.7%, the tuition waiver is 51% of tuition.

If the appointment is 8.7%, the tuition waiver is 41% of tuition.

Waiver Calculations

To calculate the amount of your waiver: - Locate your appointment percentage in the "Appointment Fraction" column. - Use the corresponding percentage listed in the "Tuition Waiver" column to compute your tuition waiver. Multiply the amount of your tuition by the corresponding percentage.

Please note: If you are eligible for a partial tuition waiver, please be aware that you will be responsible for the payment of the portion of your tuition not covered by the tuition waiver. Your tuition waiver will cover the cost of your Student Legal Services Fee each term. However, please be aware that you may be responsible for the remaining miscellaneous fees. Miscellaneous fees are comprised of the Registration Fee, Michigan Student Assembly Fee, Student Legal Services Fee, and School & College Gov't. Fee. You may be responsible for the Registration Fee, Michigan Student Assembly Fee, and School & College Gov't. fee. Some departments elect to pay the remaining miscellaneous fees (other than the SLS Fee) on behalf of their students. Please be sure to check with your department to verify whether they will pay the remaining miscellaneous fees. If your department does not pay the remaining fees, you will be responsible for payment of these fees. If not paid, you will also be responsible for payment of any late payment fees that may be assessed due to the delinquency of the miscellaneous fees.
